Program Details

A Spanish immersion program teaches academic subjects like math, science, and social studies entirely in Spanish, with the goal of students becoming fully fluent in both Spanish and English at a young age. This page has details of how the program will be implemented at MRE.

  • In the Fall of 2025, the program will start with up to one Transitional Kindergarten (TK) class, one Kindergarten class, and one 1st grade class. Which class(es) open depend on enrollment and other factors. Each year, an additional grade level will be added. This will be a "strand" program, where only one class at MRE will be the 90:10 Spanish Immersion Program, while the rest of MRE will remain English-only classes

  • The program will be optional. Families who want English-only classes for their child will not join the Spanish Immersion program.

  • Bilingual-certified teachers (also known as BCLAD-certified) will teach the classes, which will follow the District’s core curriculum and use state-adopted materials.

  • In early grades, 90% of instruction will occur in Spanish and 10% in English. The Spanish instruction will come from the class's bilingual teacher, and the English instruction will happen during class time taught by other teachers (e.g. PE, library time).

  • More English instruction will be used in higher grades, reaching 50% English and 50% Spanish in 5th grade. Since the teachers are bilingual, one teacher is able to teach both the English and Spanish content, but lessons use one language at a time.

  • Homework will be sent home in Spanish, accompanied by English instructions to assist parents in supporting their children.
